We are finally into that stage in the Super Smash we all have been waiting for. Each team in the competition has just one more match to go and the points table looks more or less settled. Auckland Hearts Women do have an outside chance to qualify but apart from winning their only remaining match, they will also need Canterbury Magicians Women to face a heavy defeat in their match.
Up next in the tournament, Auckland Hearts Women will be taking on Central Hinds Women, who are already knocked out of the contention. They would want to ensure that they do not drop further down the ladder and end their campaign on a high in season. The match between the two sides is to be played at the Eden Park Cricket Ground, Auckland.
Auckland Hearts Women got off to a terrific start to the tournament, winning both of their opening matches, and will be kicking themselves with the performance they managed to put thereafter. Although their qualification looks unlikely from here, they still have an outside chance and are likely to put in everything going into this upcoming match.
As it currently stands on the ladder, they are placed at the fourth spot with four wins from the nine matches, aggregating to a total of 16 points. They are tied on points with Canterbury Magicians Women and even a win here might not be sufficient to take them through. They have a net run rate of -0.566 and would want to improve that as well so as to bridge the gap between the Magicians and themselves.
Auckland Hearts Women may not have had a consistent run in the tournament but they are coming off a few decent outings. A win over Central Hinds Women brought them back into the contention and will now be looking to top it up with yet another win over them. It was an absolute team effort that they managed to cruise home even with Holly Huddleston.
It is still uncertain whether or not Huddleston will be part of the Hearts unit in this match, but the previous win would certainly have boosted the confidence of the Hearts. They have a pretty good unit with key players contributing consistently. They would need that kind of contribution yet again and if that happens, Central Hinds Women will find things pretty difficult going forward.
Lauren Down, Katie Perkins, Anna Peterson, Holly Huddleston, Saachi Shahri, Bella Armstrong, Izzy Gaze, Arlene Kelly, Jesse Prasad, Molly Penfold, Amie Hucker.
Central Hinds Women have been one of the worst-performing sides of the tournament so far and their position on the ladder reflects that. They had a big chance to inch towards a playoff spot when they took on Auckland Hearts Women, who were without their key player, but spilled it recklessly. They can no longer qualify for the next round, but will still be looking to finish their campaign on a high with a win here in this match.
As it currently stands on the ladder, Central Districts are placed at the fifth spot with eight points to their name. They have only two matches from a total of nine played and have a terrible net run rate of -0.694, which is better only than that or Northern Districts Women.
On paper, Central Hinds Women have a relatively good side with Amy Satterthwaite available at the helm. A lot depends on her to do well in this upcoming match. They do have plenty of talent available apart from her, but the side as a whole has been a lot inconsistent. It would be imperative the youngsters step up in this upcoming match and if they are able to do so, getting past them is going to be incredibly difficult.
Kerry-Anne Tomlinson, Emily Cunningham, Ashtuti Kumar, Ocean Bartlett, Gemma Sims, Rosemary Mair, Mikaela Greig, Georgia Atkinson, Melissa Hansen, Hannah Rowe, Claudia Green.
It is an important match in the context of the qualification scenarios with Auckland Hearts Women being well and truly still in the hunt. A win here may not make a spot certain for them, but it would certainly pave the path. Central Hinds, on the other hand, have nothing to lose and be without any pressure. Comparing the two sides on paper, there's little to separate the two. On the basis of form, however, Auckland Hearts Women seem slightly ahead.
