A steady bank of rain put an end to the proceedings in the second match of the Women's Ashes, handing a point each to both sides. Having won the first match, Australia Women are ahead in the series and can no longer lose from here. For England Women, the best case option would be to win the match and tie the series.
The forecast for the third match doesn't look too good either and both sides will be wary of that when they go out to the toss. The match between the two sides is to be played on Sunday, 23rd January 2021 at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. The first match proved to be a rather one-sided affair and with England likely to have acquainted with the conditions better now, they would be a lot tougher to deal with. Expect a cracker of a contest here at Adelaide.
There were a lot of speculations surrounding the Australian team lineup, which they cleared in a fantastic manner in the first match. They made a surprising call to exclude Elysse Perry out of their playing eleven, but the call proved to be inspirational. Australia ended up winning the match by a huge margin of six wickets with three overs to spare and they won not because England played poorly, but they won because they were terrific right throughout the match.
Chasing a total of 170, Australia lost Alyssa Healy and stared at a steep road ahead before Tahlia McGrath made her mark. Combined with Meg Lanning, she put Australia ahead in the chase. Slamming 91 off 49 deliveries, Tahlia McGrath completely changed the course of the match as Australia registered a win that would certainly have deflated their opponents. Not to mention, Meg Lanning played a brilliant innings as she never kept Tahlia McGrath starved for the strike, who was in fantastic touch.
Despite Elysse Perry missing, who can add immaculate balance to any side she plays in, Australia Women seemed perfectly balanced. Their bowlers looked pretty good and Meg Lanning had as many as six bowlers to play with. With the bat, Australia have a batting lineup that goes pretty deep with Jess Jonassen available to bat at number eight. All in all, Australia Women seem to have all bases covered and if they are able to play to their potential, beating them is going to be incredibly difficult.
Playing 11 not yet available.
England Women walked into the first match of the series with pretty much a full-strength side available but failed to convert their on-paper strength into a favorable result. They did a decent job first-up but found Australian Women to be a lot better prepared and acquainted with the conditions of Adelaide. England Women are well capable to script a comeback and they would need to do a lot better in this upcoming match.
One thing that England Women would want to improve upon is the intent with the bat. Adelaide proved to be an excellent venue to bat and we do not expect anything different in this upcoming match as well. For that reason, the England Women would want to score a lot more freely, which is something that they definitely missed in the first match. None of their batsmen managed to score at a strike rate of over 140 as England Women ended up with just about a par score.
The surface got better as the match progressed and England Women bowlers had no answers to McGrath's onslaught. Barring Katherine Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone, all their bowlers were pretty expensive. Given that they all would know the conditions better, we expect English bowlers to bowl in tight channels better than they did in the previous match.
On paper, England have a pretty good side with experience available right throughout. They need to play with a lot more intent and execute things better. If they are able to do that, they will be well in business even against this powerful Australia Women side.
Playing 11 not yet available.
Given the way these two sides were set up prior to the first match, England probably had the best chance to register in the first match, but Australia were right up to the task. Australia now have a well-balanced and settled side that will be difficult to get past. Comparing the two sides on paper and how they have played in the only match gone so far, Australia Women look ahead. We will be placing our money on an Australia win and so should you.
