BAN vs AFG Prediction - Jun 24, 2019

We are past the half-way mark in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, and things have started to clear out at the top. Wins for India and New Zealand in their respective matches have made the way a lot easier for them and their qualification for the playoffs almost certain. Sri Lanka's victory over England a couple of days ago opened up a window of opportunity for the likes of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka themselves. Bangladesh will be looking to win their remaining games to announce their claim for a semi-final spot. They are set to play their next match against Afghanistan who did exceedingly well against India in the recently concluded cracker of a contest. Afghanistan have lost all their games up until now, and while they are officially out of the race, they'd love to spoil Bangladesh's chances by securing a win in the upcoming fixture. The match will be played at The Ageas Bowl, Hampshire on 24th June.

BAN vs AFG Team Previews

Bangladesh's batting has arguably the highlight of this tournament with Shakib Al Hasan flying high among the top five run-scorers in the competition so far. Although they've won only two out of their six matches, their batting has done reasonably well in all of those with bowling struggling to find the rhythm.

After chasing down a tall total of 322 against West Indies with considerable ease, their batsmen fought well to hunt down Australia total of 382, only to lose the match by 49 runs. It was a commendable effort from their batsmen to come so close to the target considering the bowling prowess of Australia.

Up until the last match, Shakib Al Hasan was more or less single-handedly carrying their batting. However, it was refreshing to see the likes of Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad join the party after Shakib was dismissed after getting a start. The inconsistency of Tamim Iqbal and Sowmya Sarkar at the top of the order is still a massive concern for them, and they'd need to come good in the remaining matches for Bangladesh to make a mark in the tournament.

While their batting has done phenomenally well, their bowling has been equally unimpressive. Bangladesh have conceded totals in excess of 320 in all of their last three matches which has been the primary reason for all the losses they've faced so far. The likes of Mashrafe Mortaza and Saifuddin have failed to contain the batsmen, and their spinners haven't got the assistance from the surface that they generally need to thrive. It would be interesting to see how their bowlers fare against the Afghan lineup that isn't perceived to be as batting heavy as the rest of the teams in the tournament are.

Not just in the next match, Bangladesh's fortunes are heavily depended on how their bowlers fare in the tournament. Shakib Al Hasan have been their only player who has looked settled in both the departments of the game. Considering that their other two fixtures are relatively tricky, against India and Pakistan, Bangladesh will need to get a huge win over Afghanistan which could come in handy should things go down to the net run-rate. With batting already looking in superb form, their bowlers need to pick themselves up, and if they can do that, it won't be surprising if Bangladesh ends up making a mark in the tournament.

Bangladesh Playing 11

Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Mehidy Hasan, Mosaddek Hossain, Mahmudullah, Mohammad Saifuddin, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mustafizur Rahman.

Although Afghanistan lost to India in their last match, the magnitude of that loss would have certainly filled the Afghans with a lot of motivation and self-confidence. They were coming into their fixture against India after being handed a solid drubbing by England, and it was a commendable effort from their bowlers to restrict India to a below-par total.

Afghanistan will have the advantage of having already played at the Ageas Bowl and considering that the conditions here are likely to be a lot different to what Bangladesh have seen, it could turn out to be a remarkable difference. Southampton has perhaps been the only stadium where spinners have enjoyed so much success in the tournament so far and with Afghanistan heavily dependent on the performance of their spinners, playing two consecutive matches here might well be the tonic they wanted.

Afghanistan have punched way below they were expected to so far in the tournament, primarily due to their underperforming batting. They failed to chase down a manageable total against Sri Lanka and then could not deal enough damage with the bat against the potent bowling attack of India. Also, the highest total they've managed to put up in the tournament so far is just 247 which is a lot less than what other teams have been doing, considering the smallish grounds and batting friendly surfaces of England

The change in their captain just before the World Cup might also be one of the reasons for their poor performance in this tournament. They have chopped and changed their lineup as well as the batting order way too often which has led to inconsistency in their performances. Hamid Hasan was dropped posting decent performances in the first few matches and keeping the experienced Asghar Afghan out of the lineup for was somewhat surprising. Also, considering the composure Mohammad Nabi showed in the previous game and his ability to hit the ball hard and long, he is probably batting one spot lower than he should.

Afghanistan showed a lot of promise coming into the tournament, but that promise hasn't transformed into the results for them. Poor batting coupled with inconsistent team selection as well as bowling has hurt them. With the new found confidence following their inspiration performance against India, they'd be looking to put their losses behind and get some momentum heading into the fag end of the tournament. With nothing to lose and pride to play for, they can be a dangerous unit and considering that no team would want to make a mistake of taking them lightly, only to end up on the wrong side of the result.

Afghanistan Playing 11

Gulbadin Naib, R Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi, N Zadran, Samiullah Shenwari, Rashid Khan, Ikram Ali Khil, Dawlat Zadran, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

BAN vs AFG Toss Prediction

With overhead conditions likely to be overcast and surface expected to assist spinners later in the day, it's going to be a tricky decision at the toss. Both the teams are rich in spin bowling resources which could impact the decision at the toss. The surface is likely to assist spinners more and more with the progression of the game and team winning the toss is likely to bat first.

Pitch and Conditions

The rain has already made a huge impact in the tournament so far and it is likely to rain at Southampton on Monday. Having said that, it is not forecasted to be as intense as we have seen in the earlier part of the tournament and we should get a result in this match. With consistent cloud cover overhead, there is likely to be good assistance for the quick bowlers with the new ball. The surface, however, has been considerably slow in all the matches played here and the fact that the match is going to be played on a used surface, spinners will have a vital role to play after the ball loses its shine. Another reason for spinners likely to be successful here is that they are difficult to hit straight because of the big straight boundaries. Both teams were dismissed at a below-par total in the last match played here with India scoring 224 and Afghanistan ending up on 213. A taller total may be required to be posted this time around and any total above 270 should be a good score batting first here.

BAN vs AFG Dream11 Prediction

Check out the Dream11 Fantasy team for the 31st World Cup fixture, between Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Note that, we have picked this lineup on the likely assumption of Mashrafe Mortaza bringing in Mosadekk Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin back into the playing eleven mainly because of the fact that surface is expected to assist spinners and Rubel Hossain was carted all around the park in the previous fixture. Don't forget to take a look at the updated lineup right after the toss.

BAN vs AFG Betting Tips

Considering the positions on the points table, there's plenty of difference between the two sides. While Bangladesh are sitting at the sixth spot at the ladder, the Afghans are languishing right at the bottom with zero points against their name. We have seen these two teams put out some scintillating contest in the recent past and it wouldn't be surprising if the same thing happens again. Bangladesh's bowling has struggled in the tournament so far which will be a considerable cause of concern for their management coming into this match. Having said that, they are a better-balanced side between the two and done reasonably well in the tournament so far. Therefore, considering the form and the balance of the two sides, we think that Bangladesh are better placed to emerge on top in the upcoming fixture.
