Despite a storm of Covid-19 positive cases, Big Bash League 2021 continues to march on. The points table looks pretty exciting with competition getting increasingly intense in the middle part of the competition. While the top two spots seem almost covered by Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder, the game is on for the remaining two slots.
Up next in the tournament, Adelaide Strikers will be taking on Brisbane Heat in what is an important match for both these sides in the context of qualification scenarios. Both sides are sitting in the bottom of the points table and a favorable result here can act as match-defining for both these sides.
The 46th match of the Big Bash League 2021, to be played between Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers, will be played on Wednesday, January 12th, 2021 at the Gabba, Brisbane.
Brisbane Heat have undoubtedly been the team most severely affected by Covid-19 and that was apparent in the most recent match they played as well. Not only did the majority of their first-choice players test positive, but they also were not even able to find the replacements and had to get their match postponed. That left Brisbane Heat high and dry - with an incomplete squad and the reflections of which were apparent in their previous match as well.
Up until their last outing, Brisbane Heat looked well placed to get into the top four but their recent loss at the hands of Hobart Hurricanes has certainly hurt their chances. As it currently stands on the ladder, Brisbane Heat are placed at the fifth spot with three wins in ten matches. Coupled with that, they have a pretty poor net run rate of -0.447, which could prove to be a factor if they are not able to get some more wins under their belt.
On paper, Brisbane Heat have a rather depleted side with a lot depending upon the likes of Sam Heazlett, Fakhar Zaman, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. They failed to live up to the expectations in the recent match but might have a huge role to play in this upcoming match. The youngsters, however, did a decent job and will want to do that again. If that happens and the senior pros are able to contribute well, this Brisbane Heat side could prove to be a hard side to deal with.

Adelaide Strikers not only got off to a poor start to the tournament, they continued to drop down the ladder after getting back on track after that poor start. They have seen their players put up brilliant individual performances, but not many of those have mattered with Adelaide Strikers ending up on the wrong side of the result more often than not.
Up until now, the Strikers have managed to win just a couple of games and are languishing at the bottom of the points table with 13 points to their name. Despite that, they are still pretty much in contention to qualify, but getting a win here in this match will be vital. A win here will push them to the fifth spot, from where they will be in the touching distance to qualify, but they would still have to play out of their skins.
On paper, Adelaide Strikers have a lot of gaps - especially in the batting department. The absence of Alex Carey and Travis Head has clearly hurt them as they have often struggled to do the business with the bat. A lot is dependent on the likes of Matthew Short, Jonathan Wells, Matt Renshaw, and Jake Weatherland for them to do well. On the bowling front, however, they have decent resources available with Rashid Khan leading the pack. All in all, the Strikers have the resources but will need to play out of their skins going forward. If that happens, they will be one tough side to get past in the upcoming match.
Matt Short, Henry Hunt, Jake Weatherald, Jonathan Wells, Rashid Khan, Thomas Kelly, Harry Nielsen, Henry Thornton, Peter Siddle, Harry Conway, Liam Scott.
Toss hasn't been as big a factor in this tournament as it generally is in the other T20 competitions across the globe. Becuase of the big grounds and a surface that stay unaffected by the conditions, the team that plays better generally comes out on top. We expect that to be the case here as well it might well prove to be a good toss to lose. Having said that, there is a slight advantage in batting first, especially for the teams having good batting units. Considering that and the other factors stated above, the captain winning the toss is likely to elect to bat first.

Brisbane is one of the iconic venues in Australia and a lot will be known pre-match about the conditions that are usually prevalent here. Although this is a sporting venue in the longest version of the game, Brisbane tends to favor batsmen when it comes to the shortest version. Pace in the wicket and even carry ensure that stroke-making is easy and quick outfield provides value to the batsmen. Although the surface doesn't generally change much over the course of forty overs, batting under lights can be tricky here. Anything over 165 will be a fighting total here, but the team batting first would want to post 180 to feel comfortable.

This is an important match for both these sides as the winner of this match will get ahead in the race for survival in the hunt for the playoffs. Both sides have had their issues and execution will be important in this upcoming match. Considering that Brisbane Heat are still without their regular players, they are certainly an inferior side on paper. Also, the Strikers have a better bowling attack that the inexperienced Heat batsmen are likely to struggle against. Considering that and the other factors stated above, betting on an Adelaide Strikers win should be the way to go here.
Even though Adelaide Strikers have not been at their best, there is one man from their camp who has been brilliant in almost all the matches that they have played. Rashid Khan has troubled all teams thus far and is one of the leading wicket takers for the Strikers. On a ground with big boundaries and against a side that is not too well-versed in facing him, he might have a huge role to play. Bet on Khan to be the top wicket taker for the Strikers in this upcoming match.
Adelaide Strikers have struggled with the bat and that has largely because of their inconsistent top-order. With Brisbane Heat missing some of their key bowlers, this match will be a good chance for the likes of Matthew Shot, Jake Weatherald, and Matt Renshaw to get going right from the outset. Brisbane Heat, on the other hand, are likely to be a bit circumspect at the top because of the lack of depth in their batting. For that reason, we expect Adelaide Strikers to have the highest score at the end of the first six overs.
