Women's Super Smash 2021 is progressing at a blazing pace as even though we are quite some way off from the back-end of the league stage, the playoff occupants are more or less decided. Wellington Blaze Women and Otago Sparks Women have already qualified for the next round and all four other teams will now be striving hard to reserve a berth at the third spot.
Up next in the competition, Wellington Blaze Women will be taking on Central Hinds Women in what is a do-or-die match for Central Hinds. The match between the two sides is to be played at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth on 8th January 2021.
Central Hinds Women are having a dismal run in the tournament and although they are placed one spot from the bottom, they haven't been any different from the bottom dwellers - Northern Knights. With just three more matches to go, Central Hinds have an outside chance to qualify for the next round but they will have to play out of their skins to do that.
As it currently stands on the points table, Central Hinds Women are languishing at the fifth spot with just one win from a total of seven matches. They have a total of four points to their name coupled with a terrible net run rate of -0.865. Although a win here would not change their position on the ladder, it would certainly take them closer to the teams placed in the middle part of the points table.
Central Hinds had a terrible start to the tournament as they lost all of their first four contests. They then bounced back with a win over Auckland Hearts in a closely fought match only to lose momentum by registering back-to-back losses in their next couple of matches. They were particularly dismal in their last outing as Canterbury Magicians Women defeated them by a pretty big margin of five wickets with nine deliveries to spare.
The primary reason for Central Hinds not firing all cylinders in the tournament so far is that their experienced players haven't really been their standout players. Together, the Hinds have performed well below par and would want to improve. Their performance against the Hearts showed that they have a pretty capable unit that can defeat even the best on their day. If they are able to play to their potential, they could be a big threat to deal with.

Wellington Blaze have undoubtedly been the best side of the tournament thus far and their position on the points table clearly reflects that. They have won all of the six matches that they have played and will be keen to keep their record flawless when they take on Central Hinds in this upcoming match.
As it currently stands, Wellington Blaze Women are more or less qualified for the next round with 24 points to their name. Coupled with that, they have a net run rate of 2.616, which shows how dominant they have been. They are coming off a superb win over Otago Sparks in their latest match.
Batting first against Otago Women in a rain-hit encounter, Wellington Women managed to put up a total of 108 runs on the board in 12 overs. They kept losing wickets at the regular intervals but never allowed their net run rate to drop down and that proved to be the difference between the two sides. Their bowlers were spectacular in the second innings as they completely dismantled Otago Women for a total of just 75 runs.
On paper, Wellington Women have one of the best sides of the tournament and will be hard to defeat if they are able to perform at their peak potential. The likes of Amelia Kerr, Leigh Kasperek, and Maddy Green have extensive experience of playing in crunch situations and that could prove to be a deciding factor. Having said that, Wellington Women have been in terrific form and if they are able to carry that on, they will be a difficult side to get past.

Although chasing is the more popular decision at the toss in this format of the game, it hasn't really worked in this tournament. With surfaces getting slower, the team defending has had a considerable advantage, especially with the runs on the board. We expect those factors to come into the picture in this upcoming match as well and the captain winning the toss is likely to bat first.

Almost none of the matches in the Women's Super Smash 2021 has been a high-scoring game and that speaks volumes about the kind of conditions we have had in the tournament. While the batting has gotten easier as the tournament has progressed, bowlers have still enjoyed more and we expect nothing different in this upcoming match as well. The surface is expected to slow down too and the slower bowlers are likely to have a massive role to play. Considering all aspects, the team batting first should be pretty happy if they are able to cross the 145-run mark.

This may not be a match as important as the other ones have been for Wellington Blaze, but this is certainly a match of massive importance for Central Hinds. Being a do-or-die match for them, they are expected to come out all guns blazing in this upcoming encounter. Considering the form and on-paper combinations of the two sides, placing your money on the Wellington Blaze Women win should be the way to go here.
Amelia Kerr has been the stand-out player for the Wellington Blaze and has clearly been miles ahead of her teammates, as far as the performance so far in the tournament is concerned. She can contribute with match-defining performances in both departments of the game and is, therefore, our choice to bet on for the player of the match award.
Wellington Firebirds have so far ridden well on the back of the consistent performances from two of their most experienced players in Amelia Kerr and Leigh Kasperek. While Kerr has contributed brilliantly as an all-rounder, Kasperek have been extremely consistent with the ball. We expect her to bowl a good spell once again. Bet on Kasperek to be the best bowler of the day for Wellington Blaze Women in this upcoming match.
