Super Smash 2021 is as competitively packed as ever at the top with top-three teams at the ladder placed within a couple of points of each other. Also, all three teams placed in the bottom half of the ladder will be striving hard to get into the top half, making the next few matches in the tournament all to play for.
Up next in the competition, Central Districts are all set to take on Northern Knights in what is going to govern the interim table toppers. Both these sides are placed in the top half of the points table and the winner here will occupy the top spot, albeit for the time being.
The match between the two sides is to be played at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth on 30th December 2021. Given the form these two sides have been in and the stakes involved, we expect this to be a cracker of a contest.
Winning both of their opening two matches, Central Stags couldn't have gotten off to a better start than they had. They got over Otago Volts and Wellington Firebirds in their first two matches respectively but lost the plot as the competition progressed. So poor have they been in the recent matches that they have managed to register only one win out of their last three matches.
As it currently stands on the points table, Central Stags are placed third with just three wins from five matches. They have a total of 12 points with a net run rate of 0.262. The fact that there are four teams with three wins each from five matches would certainly make them strive to get a string of favorable results in their next few matches. A win in this upcoming match will push them to the top of the ladder and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
In their last match, Central Stags failed to get past Auckland Aces as they lost the match by a narrow margin of four wickets with just one ball remaining. Batting first, Central Stags managed to put up just about a par score of 168, which they couldn't eventually defend. Bayley Wiggins, Greg Hay, and Dane Cleaver scored remarkable cameos at the top of the order, but lack of flourishing finish meant that Stags finished with a few runs fewer than what they wanted.
Their bowlers made a terrific impact with the ball, especially at the top, but could not keep things tight at the death and that is exactly what cost them the match. They allowed Auckland Aces to score as many as 66 runs in the last five overs as none of their bowlers managed to bowl according to the field. Keeping calm under pressure is one thing that they could not do and that will be a major factor in this upcoming contest.
On paper, Central Stags have a decent side, but there are a few areas where they would want to improve. While their top-order looks accomplished, they do lack depth in the batting department. It looks to be the same with their bowling too, which is prone to cracking under pressure and we saw that happen in their previous match. They will be desperate to bounce back to the winning ways and if they are able to hold their nerve in crunch situations, they will be one dangerous side to deal with.

Northern Knights are arguably one of the most pleasing sides to watch playing as far as New Zealand's domestic circuit is concerned. However, they are rarely available at their full strength and that is the case in the ongoing season as well. Despite that, they have done exceedingly well so far and another win here will certainly put them in a great position as far as a qualification to the next round is concerned.
At the points table as of now, Northern Knights are in a leading position with three wins from five matches, aggregating to 14 points in total. They also have a spectacular net run rate of 0.577, which can get important if things get tight towards the end of the league stage.
The Knights have lost just one match in the competition, the loss that came in quite early - in their first match. Since then, however, the Knights have looked brilliant and have only improved with every passing match. They are coming off a close win over Canterbury Kings in a match that looked gone before Trent Boult hit the final ball six to seal the deal for them.
Experience is arguably the biggest strength of the Knights who have several players with international experience at their disposal. The likes of Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Scott Koggelijn, and Trent Boult are proven T20 campaigners and their presence enough can be inspirational for the team and detrimental to the confidence of the opponents.
All in all, apart from having a well-balanced side on paper, they also have momentum going for them. Given that they are coming off three back to back wins into this match, the Knights will be brimming with confidence. If they aren't complacent going into the upcoming match and are able to play to their potential, beating them is going to be a very difficult task.

This is the first match of the tournament at this venue and that will be an air of uncertainty. Also, the overcast conditions will most likely make things difficult for batsmen, especially early in the morning. Considering that, we expect the captain to win the toss to field first.

Just like the other venues in New Zealand, New Plymouth features a ground with short boundaries and a fast surface. Although the fast bowlers will have some assistance, that will be almost negated by the dimensions of the ground. That said, the even bounce and quick carry-through to the wicket-keeper will allow the batsmen to play their shots. It is going to be a cloudy day with temperatures hovering in the range of 20 degrees and bowlers should enjoy bowling here. We expect this to be a sporting surface with something there for both bowlers and batsmen. Considering that, the team batting first should be pretty happy with a total of at least 165 runs on the board.

Given that the top of the table position is at stake, even though for the time being, both sides are expected to come out hard at each other. Northern Knights may not be available at their full strength yet, they have done reasonably well. Central Stags, on the other hand, are appearing to be losing steams just when they need to make a move. Considering that and the fact that the Knights have a better-balanced side between the two, at least on paper, placing your money on a Northern Knights win should be the way to go here.
Central Stags have a terrific top-order that has been in prime form as well. Northern Knights, on the other hand, have most of their firepower in the middle-order. Therefore, we expect that the Stags would want to cover most of the ground early in their innings. Bet on Central Stags to have the highest total at the end of the first six overs.
Trent Boult may not have showcased his best in the competition, these are the conditions where he will enjoy bowling. He is someone who bowls at the death and in the powerplay thereby having ample opportunities to pick up wickets. Bet on Trent Boult to end the match with a total of at least a couple of wickets.
