We are just one step away from getting our finalists of the Royal London One Day Cup 2021, a tournament that has so far been overshadowed by the Hundred and India's tour of England. With the tournament set to come to its conclusion in the next few days, the excitement is at its pinnacle. Glamorgan have already qualified for the grand finale and the other team will be decided by a match between Durham and Surrey.
The second semifinal of the competition is to be played between Durham and Surrey at Riverside Emirates on 17th August 2021. This is a high-stakes encounter and a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.
Durham were the best side of not only their group, but also the tournament during the league stage. This fact is evident by the number of points they had at the end of the league stage and their position on the points table then. With 13 points in eight matches, Durham topped the Group B points table. Besides, they lost just one match in the whole competition and would now have them brimming with confidence.
Even though Durham were affected badly by the Hundred, their players did well to step on the gas pedal just when it mattered the most. Their experienced players in Graham Clark, Scott Borthwick, and Chris Rushworth have done remarkably well up until now and will not be easy to deal with. Apart from that, Durham have a terrific contingent of all-rounders who provide immaculate balance to their side.
Overall, Durham have an extremely well-balanced side with plenty of match winners available. Also, they have been in terrific form of late and will be brimming with momentum. If they can play to their potential in the upcoming match as well, beating them is going to be incredibly difficult.
Alex Lees, Graham Clark, Scott Borthwick, Cameron Bancroft, David Bedingham, Sean Dickson, Liam Trevaskis, Doneathy, Matt Salisbury, Chris Rushworth, Jack Campbell.
Surrey may not have started off their run in the Royal London One Day Cup in a manner they wanted, but they certainly finished the league stage well. They managed to qualify for the knockouts after finishing second on the points table. They aggregated ten points from eight matches with a terrific net run-rate of 0.409.
Surrey's players have picked up decent form of late with the likes of Tim David and Ryan Patel doing a decent job. Also, the youngsters have stepped up their game in the absence of some key players. All in all, Surrey's bowling looks a little light on paper, but they do have the batting to cover for it. If they manage to perform to their on-paper abilities, Durham will have their work cut out on Tuesday.
Mark Stoneman, Ryan Patel, Ollie Pope, Tim David, Jamie Smith, Rikki Clarke, Cameron Steel, Nico Reifer, Conor McKerr, Daniel Moriarty, Matt Dunn.
Given what is at stake in this important match, both sides are expected to come out all guns blazing. Durham and Surrey are both in terrific form and should offer a cracking contest on Tuesday. Considering what has happened in the tournament thus far and the two sides on paper, placing your money on a Durham win should be the way to go here. Back Durham to win and progres to the finale.
