We are just closing in on the business end of the tournament in the Lanka Premier League 2021 and the points table is shaping up beautifully. Jaffna Kings are running away at the top and the competition is getting intense in the middle part of the points table. Dambulla Giants and Galle Gladiators are fighting it hard to get into the top two slots and are set to take on each other in the upcoming contest of the tournament.
Both these sides have not been at their best up until now and will want to gather some momentum before the knockouts, which are nearing us with every passing match. This match between the two sides is to be played on 14th December 2021 at R Premadasa Cricket Stadium, Colombo.
Galle Gladiators have not done as well as they would have liked, but they would be fairly satisfied by their run in the tournament up until now. They have missed out on some close moments, which has taken away at least a couple of important points from their kitty. A win here, however, will push them back to the second spot and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
Currently, on the points table, Galle Gladiators are placed third with two wins and three losses from a total of six matches played. Despite the number of losses, their net run rate sits at a reasonable -0.106, which can come in handy in case it gets tied for the second spot.
On paper, Galle Gladiators are loaded with decent local talent, which can be a boon in this format of the game. We saw Mohammad Hafeez gaining some form in one of their last few matches and that could prove to be an important factor. The return to form for Kusal Mendis would also be something they will be glad about. All in all, the Gladiators punched above their weight in the matches they won and would need to do that again in the upcoming match. If they can do that, they should be well poised to get their third win of the tournament.
Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka, Mohammad Hafeez, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, SR Patel, Isuru Udana, Mohammed Shamaaz, Dhananjaya Lakshan, Noor Ahmad, Mohammad Amir, Pulina Tharanga.
Dambulla Giants are one of the pre-tournament favorites and they did manage to get off to a terrific start, but they have not been able to keep up with the consistency they needed to impress their fans. Having said that, they are still placed well to not only qualify for the next round but also to come out as the second-best side of their group.
As it currently stands, Dambulla Giants are placed at the second spot on the ladder with three wins to their name, totaling seven points. However, their poor net run rate of -1.155 demonstrates that they have not been as dominating as their position on the points table suggests.
On paper, Dambulla Giants have a terrific batting unit, but inconsistency has been a factor. We saw them bundle out for a paltry total in their last outing and that will be playing on their minds. On the bowling front, however, they have done a reasonably good job. Not only have their batting been inconsistent, but they have also lacked the necessary support from the lower-middle order, which in turn has put additional pressure on their top order.
All in all, Dambulla Giants may be in a good position up until now, but they could have very easily been in the bottom half of the points table. Having said that, they have the required resources available at their disposal and if they can execute things well hereon, getting past them could prove to be rather difficult.
Philip Salt, Niroshan Dickwella, Janith Liyanage, N Zadran, Chamika Karunaratne, Ramesh Mendis, Tharindu Ratnayake, Sachitha Jayathilake, Imran Tahir, Joshua Little, Dasun Shanaka.
This is an important match that will most likely determine the occupants of the second spot on the ladder. Currently, Dambulla Giants are sitting pretty there, but a loss here would make things interesting. Both sides are coming not only coming off losses in their respective last matches, they both also were dismal with the bat in those matches. Comparing the sides on the basis of form could be futile. On paper, however, Galle Gladiators are looking a better-balanced side and are, therefore, better placed to emerge on top in this upcoming fixture.
