We are just moving into the fag-end of the tournament in the National One Day Cup, Pakistan's premier white-ball competition. Things have been exciting in the tournament already and with the points table resting in balance, we are certainly up for a tight finish. Up next in the tournament, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is set to take on Central Punjab in what is going to be an important match for both these sides. The match is to be played at the House of the Northern Cricket Ground, Islamabad on 22nd March 2022.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may not have done a whole lot better than Central Punjab in the tournament so far, but they have certainly done enough to stay ahead in the pecking order, as far as getting to the next round is concerned. They are coming off a win in their last match, defeating Southern Punjab by a narrow margin of 35 runs.
Batting first, the usual suspects in Fakhar Zama and Mohammad Sarwar were excellent for them especially after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa failed to get off to the kind of start they were looking for. Batting first, Khyber finished with a decent score of 285 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs before they restricted their opponents to a total even lower than that.
Overall, Khyber do not only have a better-balanced side, they also have the momentum working for them. If they can play to their potential in this upcoming match, getting past them could prove to be a very difficult job.
Kamran Ghulam, Adil Amin, Mohammad Sarwar, Mehran Ibrahim, Khalid Usman, Arshad Iqbal, Imran Khan, Yasir Khan, Imran Khan Jr, Ashfaq Ahmed, Rehan Afridi.
Central Punjab are coming into this match on the back of a heavy loss at the hands of Balochistan as they failed to perform in both departments of the game. Owing to that and their poor form in the recent matches, Central Punjab are currently placed at the fourth spot with six points to their name coupled with a rather poor net run rate of -0.255.
Chasing a total of 371 on a decent surface, Central Punjab got just the kind of start they were looking for with Ahmed Shehzad scoring a 54-ball 66. However, they could not carry the momentum late into the innings as they eventually lost the match by 76 runs. Earlier with the ball, they were dismal as they not only gave away too many freebies but also failed to bowl enough wicket-taking deliveries.
All in all, Central Punjab have a well-balanced side with talented players available right through. However, they do lack the necessary skills to handle pressure. We have seen that happen with them over their last three matches and it is high time that they get manage to use their skills well. If they are able to do that, getting past Central Punjab is going to be a very difficult task.
