Big Bash League 2021 is getting chaotic with every passing day as Covid is gripping the tournament harder and stronger. Brisbane Heat had their match postponed against Sydney Sixers and will now be looking to gather some momentum in the tournament up next.
Their next assignment is against Melbourne Renegades, who just managed to get their second win of the tournament, overcoming the Melbourne Stars challenge. The match between the two sides is to be played on January 6th, 2021 at GMHBA Stadium, South Geelong, Victoria.
With a much-needed win over Melbourne Stars, Melbourne Renegades finally got off the bottom of the points table after defeating a depleted Melbourne Stars side. Melbourne Renegades are having a poor run since the beginning of the last season and another win here works a long way in removing that blot from their campaign.
As it currently stands on the points table, Melbourne Renegades are placed at the seventh spot on the ladder with 11 points to their name. They have won just two matches so far - one against the Strikers and the other one over the Stars. Apart from being near the bottom of the pit, they have a terrible net run rate of -1.367, which just shows how dominated they have been. Having said that, they are still pretty much in business to get to the next round, and winning this upcoming match will be of significant importance.
Although their recent win was in no way a clinical one or over a full-strength side, it certainly would have provided the Renegades with the much-needed momentum. Chasing a total of 126, they did a decent job with their usual suspects chipping in and would want them to do a step better in this upcoming match. Bowling, undoubtedly, was Renegades' strong point in the previous match and it wasn't surprising to see that as well.
In the tournament gone by, Renegades' bowlers have done a decent job only to be left disappointed by a poor show by the batsmen. With Aaron Finch back in form and Shaun Marsh looking good, this Renegades' unit might be in with something special. They have the experience required to do the business and if they are able to play to their on-paper potential, they should be very difficult to get past.
Sam Harper, Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, Nic Maddinson, Mackenzie Harvey, James Seymour, Will Sutherland, James Pattinson, Kane Richardson, Zak Evans, Zahir Khan.
Just when Brisbane Heat were looking like getting into a groove and things beginning to go well for Brisbane Heat, as many as 12 players tested positive for Covid-19. With not enough replacements available, Brisbane Heat had to postpone their previous fixture and will be in with a pretty much-depleted side n this upcoming encounter.
Brisbane Heat are in a pretty delicate position on the points table, placed at the fifth spot with three wins in eight matches, aggregating to a total of 14 points. Besides, they have a net run rate of -0.155, which they would certainly want to improve going into the business end of the tournament. A big win will push them to the fourth spot and that is exactly what they will be eyeing to do in this upcoming match.
Brisbane Heat had a rather poor start to the tournament and were languishing near the bottom for the most part, but a couple of good outings in recent times has put their journey back on track. They are coming off a 14-run win over Hobart Hurricanes in their previous match and will be eying another one. Having said that, they will not be having the services of many of their first-choice players and things can be a lot different for them than those were in their previous encounter.
Brisbane Heat had a decent side, but with the details of positive players still unknown, it is hard to judge their on-paper strength for the upcoming match. However, they are expected to fill their squad with domestic players, most of whom would be having ample experience of playing at the competitive level. Brisbane Heat will have to play out of their skins in this upcoming match and if they are able to do that, they will be in business.
Jake Lehmann, Jack Clayton, Fakhar Zaman, Sam Heazlett, Tom Cooper, Lachlan Pfeffer, Steven McGiffin, Will Prestwidge, Ronan McDonald, David Grant, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Considering all that has happened in the tournament, on and off the field, both sides will be under a tremendous amount of pressure. Also, the conditions are expected to be such that no team would want to bat first here. Even though the surface is expected to slow down as the match progresses, we don't think that would make much of a difference. For all the reasons stated above, the captain winning the toss is expected to field first.

This is the first match of the tournament at this venue and with BBL moving to Melbourne hub, this might as well be the last. Apart from the Covid scares already, there will be plenty of uncertainty surrounding the surface, and determining a safe score to set could be a difficult job. The ground features shorter boundaries than most of the Australian grounds and that would certainly be an advantage for batsmen looking to go all the way. Also, we expect the surface to be a bit on the slower side and spinners will be in for a chance, more so in the second innings. Considering all that, the team batting first would want to put at least 170 runs on the board.

Considering that both sides are striving hard to get into the thick of things are far as the qualification for the next round is concerned, this match carries significant importance for both these sides. While the Renegades have been an otherwise poor-performing side, Brisbane Heat have just been hit by a Covid-19 wave. Considering the two sides on all accounts, Melbourne Renegades are certainly the better of the two sides. Bet on Renegades to emerge on top in this all-important encounter.
Melbourne Renegades have had a poor run in the tournament and that has primarily been due to their batsmen not firing consistently. Aaron Finch started off pretty slow, but with a couple of big scores to his name, he would want to continue building on the momentum. Bet on Aaron Finch to score a fifty here in this match.
Kane Richardson was the best bowler for the Renegades in the previous match and will be the one to watch out for here in this match as well. Besides, he bowls at the death and in the powerplay, getting the most opportunity to pick up wickets. Given the form he is in, bet on Richardson to be the best bowler of the day for Melbourne Renegades.
