The tournament that was expected to go on expected terms before it commenced is turning out to be a roller-coaster ride for all the teams. We have already seen some high-profile matches produce unexpected results in the tournament thus far and if those are signs for the things to come, we are certainly in for a treat.
Up next in the tournament, Melbourne Renegades Women are set to take on Perth Scorchers Women in what is expected to be a cracker of a contest. The match between the two sides is to be played at WACA Cricket Ground, Perth.
Currently placed at the top of the points table, Melbourne Renegades Women have certainly done a lot better than many expected them to before the tournament began. They have so far won five matches out of seven played and have a decent net run rate to go with their wins. They have lost just one match, which was way back on October 20th, against Adelaide Strikers.
In the last season, Melbourne Renegades Women finished at the seventh position and regardless of what happens hereon, it has already been a fantastic turnaround for them. With their recent win, which came against the Strikers Women, they are on a four-match winning streak and would be looking to grow that further.
For the Renegades Women, it is the Indian pair of Jemimah Rodriques and Harmanpreet Kaur that has put them in the pole position. Together, Kaur and Rodriques have put together over 400 runs in the tournament and that is already a big feat. With the ball, Sophie Molineux has been brilliant and the other bowlers have chipped in beautifully.
Melbourne Renegades Women have been heavily reliant on their spinners and that has paid rich dividends thus far. Also, not many players have contributed for them down the order and that could prove to be a factor in crunch situations. All in all the positives certainly outweigh the negatives that the Renegades have displayed and the results show that. If the Renegades can continue to build on how they have done, beating them is going to be incredibly difficult going forward.
Jemimah Rodrigues, Josie Dooley, Courtney Webb, Jess Duffin, Harmanpreet Kaur, Sophie Molineux, Eve Jones, Carly Leeson, Ellie Falconer, Ella Hayward, Holly Ferling.
We are just halfway through the competition and Perth Scorchers Women have already had a roller coaster ride. They started off with a close win, then stayed near the bottom of the table for some time before getting into the top half. As it stands now, they are placed at the fifth spot on the ladder with three wins and two losses in six matches, totalling to seven points.
In the six matches that Perth Scorchers Women have played, their over-reliance on Sophie Devine has been crystal clear. In two of their three wins, Sophie Devine did the bulk of the business. When she failed, however, the other players failed to step up their game. In their most recent match, however, we saw that change as Sophie Devine played a match-defining knock, handing Scorchers their third win of the season.
Scorchers have done a decent job with the ball with Alana King and Lilly Mills both doing reasonably well in the middle overs. Having said that, they would need better contribution from the rest of the bowlers for Scorchers to get a more consistent going forward.
Overall, Perth Scorchers Women have done pretty much one expected terms with their usual suspects doing well. However, they are still searching for contributions from their lesser-known players and if the youngsters can contribute more, Perth Scorchers Women should be able to bounce back into the top four with a win in their upcoming contest.
Sophie Devine, Beth Mooney, Chamari Atapattu, M Carmichael, Heather Graham, Lisa Griffith, Marizanne Kapp, Alana King, Lilly Mills, Taneale Peschel, Chloe Piparo.

Even though the two sides are placed well apart from each other on the points table, a couple of contrasting results can bridge that gap pretty quickly. Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney have done a terrific job for the Scorchers Women and will be difficult to stop. Having said that, Melbourne Renegades Women have a better balanced unit with almost all bases covered. Besides, with five wins from seven matches, they will be a more confident team going into this match. For those reasons and the ones stated above, we will be placing our bets on the Melbourne Renegades Women win and so should you.
