Melbourne Renegades To Win the Match, 1.90
Read our quick thoughts
  • Melbourne Renegades are available almost at their full strength and are a better-balanced side between the two, at least on paper
  • With the majority of their first-choice players sitting out, Melbourne Stars are a little low on experience and depend heavily on Maxwell, Clarke, and Cartwright
  • With a couple of decent all-rounders available, the Renegades bat deep, which can be a crucial factor in crunch games

MLS vs MLR Prediction - Jan 03, 2022

Just as we are moving into the second half of the ladder in the Big Bash League 2021, Covid-19 is beginning to grip the tournament. Fortunately for the fans and the punters, the competition is set to go on as scheduled and things might change quickly with many sides not being at their full strength.

Up next in the competition, Melbourne Stars are set to take on Melbourne Renegades. Both these sides are placed in the bottom half of the points table and will see this match as an opportunity to gain some points and improve their respective net run rates, which can prove to be crucial in the back-end of the league stage.

This upcoming match is to be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne on January 3rd, 2021. Apart from being an important contest, this is a Melbourne derby and both sides are expected to come out hard at each other. A cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.

MLS vs MLR Team Previews

Melbourne Stars

Just when it looked like Melbourne Stars would be making their way back into the contention for the knockouts, they got hit by a severe Covid-19 wave that left them ten members short of what they initially started the tournament with. Although they are still placed in the bottom half of the ladder, they are still pretty much in the hunt to get to the next round.

With three wins from seven matches, Melbourne Stars are placed at the sixth spot with ten points to their name. Besides they have a terrible net run rate of -1.316, which is so poor largely because of the heavy defeat they faced in their opening contest of the tournament at the hands of Sydney Sixers.

With ten players testing positive for Covid-19, Melbourne Stars have completely revamped not only their side but also the coaching staff for at least the next few matches. Thankfully for them, though, their most experienced player in Glenn Maxwell is still available and will be leading the side in this upcoming contest. To complete the squad, the Stars have called up six players to supplement the squad and we saw a few of them play in the previous match as well.

Stars took the field recently against the Scorchers and although the end result tells something else, they did compete well for a good part of this match. Bowling first, Stars weren't as good as they would have wanted to be but did a decent job to not allow the Scorchers to run away with the match. Qais Ahmed was once again the pick of their bowlers as he returned with the figures of 2 for 26 in his four. All other bowlers, however, were relatively expensive and will need to do a lot better in the upcoming contest.

Riding on fantastic knocks by Joe Clarke and Thomas Rogers, Melbourne Stars got off to a fantastic start with the bat. With 78 for no loss in the ninth over, they were looking well set to overhaul the target, but a couple of wickets in consecutive overs stalled their chance. Soon after, Glenn Maxwell was castled by Hatzoglou and that triggered a collapse from which the Stars could not recover.

There isn't a lot that can be said about the team's on-paper strength when as many as ten of their first-choice players are not available. Having said that, the Stars still have the players like Joe Clarke, Glenn Maxwell, Hilton Cartwright, and Qais Ahmed, who all can turn the game around in a matter of minutes. They would need support from that youngsters and if the seniors and the youngsters are able to collaborate well, Melbourne Stars can certainly throw some pleasant surprises for their fans.

Melbourne Renegades

Melbourne Renegades are having a poor run in this tournament and remarkably they are carrying this poor form since the last season. They still have more than half the season left to go in this edition though and will be looking to turn things around. Given that they'll be taking on a depleted Stars' unit, they will certainly be fancying their chances to add some important points to their tally in this upcoming match.

As it currently stands on the ladder, Melbourne Renegades are placed at the bottom with only one win from a total of seven matches. They have a total of 6.5 points to their name coupled with a terrible net run rate of -1.758. Even though qualifying from here is going to be a steep climb for them, they are still in it and will likely come out all guns blazing in a bid to move up the ladder.

Renegades are coming off a washout in a match that they were scheduled to play against Sydney Sixers. Before that, they took on Hurricanes in a high-scoring game in which they faced a heavy 85-run defeat at the hands of Hurricanes. Given the results we have seen of late, the Renegades have clearly been far from their best and will be running low on confidence.

On paper, the Renegades do not really have a side as poor as the results reflect. With the likes of Aaron Finch, Nic Maddinson, Kane Richardson, and Mohammad Nabi available, the Renegades have a decent side that has just been lacking execution. Facing a near half-strength Stars' unit might be the blessing that the Renegades need to come back to the winning ways. Having said that, given the way they have done in the tournament so far, even that would not be easy.

All in all, Melbourne Renegades have a decent side on paper that just needs a spark to get back on track. They have an opportunity to do so in this upcoming game and they would need their experienced campaigners to step up here. If that happens and the Renegades are able to play to their peak potential, beating them is going to be very difficult for Melbourne Stars.

MLS vs MLR Toss Prediction

Even though we do not expect the surface to change much during the course of the match, chasing can get relatively tougher if the team batting first manages to put up a tall total here. That is exactly what happened in the last two matches here and both captains will be wary of that. Also, spinners do enjoy an extra wee bit of assistance in the second innings. Considering that, the recent results, and the fact that both sides would not want to get into a high-pressure situation, we expect the captain winning the toss to bat first.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

Melbourne's surface generally stays true throughout the course of the match and that is exactly what happened in the last two matches played here. Also, with the large boundaries on offer, spinners can play a vital role in what otherwise is a high-scoring venue. It is going to be a bit cloudy, but the rain is expected to stay away on the match day. Given the recent totals at this venue and the surface that is likely to be on offer, the team batting first will be targeting to score a total of at least 175 runs.

MLS vs MLR Betting Tips

Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades have both failed to live up to the standards they set and should produce an entertaining game here at Melbourne. Both sides have had their set of troubles in recent times and will be desperate to get back to the winning ways. Comparing the two sides on paper, Melbourne Renegades do look better placed with plenty of experience available. Having said that, they have been poor in the tournament thus far and might be running low on confidence. Melbourne Stars, however, haven't done too well either. Considering that and the other above-stated factors, the Renegades are clearly a better side between the two, and betting on their win should be the way to go here in this Melbourne derby.

Joe Clarke - To Score a Fifty - Yes

Joe Clarke was undoubtedly the best batsman for the Stars in the previous match and he is someone who can really rack up big scores when in form. Also, he seems to be enjoying batting at this venue and will be well acquainted with the pace. Considering that, a bet on him to score a fifty here seems to be a pretty lucrative proposition.

Melbourne Stars - Best Bowler - Qais Ahmed

With most of their first-choice bowlers absent, the Stars' bowling seems a shadow of itself and the onus will be on their experienced bowlers to provide their side with important breakthroughs. Qais Ahmed is in fine form and will be looking forward to spinning his web against a side not known for their exploits against the spinners. Also, the spinners are likely to get a bit of assistance here at this venue. Bet on Qais Ahmed to be the best bowler of the match for the Stars.
