Read our quick thoughts
  • Canterbury Kings are an overall better balanced side between the two, at least on paper
  • Northern Districts are a little too over-reliant on the likes of Tim Seifert, Colin de Grandhomme, and Ish Sodhi to do the business
  • Ed Nuttall, Matt Henry, Chad Bowes, and Cam Fletcher have been in terrific form and will be difficult to deal with for the Northern Districts' bowlers

NK vs CK Prediction - Dec 23, 2021

It's been some time since the 2021 edition of Super Smash has started, but the points table is still looking as competitive as any. Apart from Auckland Aces, who are yet to register a win in this competition, all teams are looking good. The next few games are going to be mighty important and teams playing are certain to come out hard at each other.

Up next in the competition, Northern Knights will be taking on Canterbury Kings in an important encounter that will decide the table-toppers, at least for the time being. The match between the two sides is to be played at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on 21st December 2021.

NK vs CK Team Previews

Northern Knights

Northern Knights were one of the worst-performing sides last year and they certainly did learn something from their last year's campaign. Although, they are still now where they would have wanted to be, they would take the start they have gotten with both hands. Another win here will take them to the top of the table, at least in the interim, and that is exactly what they will be aiming for in this upcoming contest.

As it currently stands, Northern Knights are placed at the second spot on the ladder with two wins from four matches, aggregating to ten points. Besides that, they have a terrific net run rate of 0.822, which is the second-best amongst all teams in the tournament.

Northern Knights had a poor start to the tournament, reminiscent of their last year's campaign, but with two back to back wins, they have bounced back into the competition. They started off with a narrow loss to Otago Volts after their opening game was washed out due to rain. Just when their campaign was looking to be going in a familiar direction, they registered a couple of massive wins, both over Auckland Aces.

In their last match, their bowlers did a fantastic job of restricting the Aces to a total of just 92 runs. Although they did experience a few hiccups to chase that total down, they overhauled that total with six wickets in hand and 29 balls to spare. Their win would have not only boosted their confidence, it also boosted their net run rate that looked mediocre before that match.

On paper, Northern Districts are not yet at their full-strength with their international stars yet to join them. Having said that, the likes of Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Seifert, and Ish Sodhi are capable enough together to help defeat any given side on their day. If the experienced players play to their potential for the Knights and the youngsters are able to step up their game, Northern Knights will certainly make things difficult for the Kings in this upcoming encounter.

Canterbury Kings

Canterbury Kings may not be placed in the top-half of the ladder at the moment, they have undoubtedly done a terrific job up until now. They have played the least number of games amongst all teams in the top four and if they are able to register a win in this upcoming contest, they will rise up the ladder to occupy the top spot.

At the moment, the Kings are placed at the third spot with two wins from three matches, totalling to eight points. What's more remarkable is their net run rate of 0.928, which just illustrates how dominating they have been in the two matches they have won so far. The Kings started off with a disappointing loss at the hands of Wellington Firebirds in their opening contest, but then quickly got their act together to register a couple of consecutive wins.

In their last two matches, the Kings have registered wins over Otago Volts and Wellington Firebirds by the margins of 47 runs and six wickets respectively. Against the Firebirds, in particular, which was also their most recent encounter, the Kings appeared at their dominating best as their batsmen and bowlers both contributed to their superb win.

Bowling first, Canterbury Kings' bowlers bowled in tight channels and consequently kept chipping away at the wickets. Eventually, the Firebirds were restricted to a total of just 151, which proved to be a walk in the park for Canterbury Kings. Ed Nuttall was the of their bowling as he grabbed three important wickets at the expense of 28 runs in his four overs. On the batting front, we saw Chad Bowes and Cam Fletcher contribute with remarkable fifties.

In the previous edition, it was the opening pair of Canterbury Kings that single handedly got them to the playoffs. Chad Bowes and Ken McClure will have a big role to play in this upcoming match and they certainly appear to be well-equipped. With the likes of Leo Carter and Cam Fletcher to follow, their batting does look well balanced, albeit being a little inexperienced.

Their bowling, however, certainly looks flawless with Ed Nuttall, Matt Henry, and Todd Astle all doing well. Their frontline bowlers have so far gotten ample support from the youngsters and that has been one of the major reasons for the Kings' success so far. If that continues to happen and their top-order batsmen are able to play to their potential, Canterbury Kings will be a one tough side to contend with.

NK vs CK Toss Prediction

Although batting is expected to be easy here, no team would really want to take a chance to test the conditions early on. Also, determining a safe total to set could be a difficult exercise at a high-scoring venue and no team would want to do that. Considering that and the fact that the surface is likely to stay true throughout, the captain winning the toss would want to field first.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

This is the first match of the series at the venue and there will certainly be an air of uncertainty about the conditions. Bay Oval, historically, has been a high-scoring venue and that can be attributed to its relatively short boundaries and true surface. We expect the conditions to be batting friendly in the upcoming match as well and bowlers might well have a hard time. With temperature hovering around 20 degrees and almost zero chances of rain, it is expected to be a beautiful day for cricket. The team batting first should be looking to score a total of at least 185 runs here and even that won't be a safe one.

NK vs CK Betting Tips

With the top-spot up for grabs, the result of this match holds high importance. Both sides started off rather poorly in the tournament, but then bounced back with a couple of remarkable wins in their respective subsequent contests. Both these sides will be brimming with confidence and are expected to come out all guns blazing. Comparing the recent form and the on-paper combinations of the two sides, Canterbury Kings appear to be a slightly better-balanced unit. With bowlers in fine form, which is going to be a key here, Canterbury Kings are firm favorites to emerge on top in this upcoming contest.

    Total Runs - Match - Over 320.5

This is one venue where we haven't really seen low totals been scored in recent times. With the conditions suiting the batsmen and short boundaries to accompany that, keeping batsmen from scoring can be very difficult. Considering that and the batting units that these two sides have, we are looking at a high scoring match. Bet on match total to exceed 320 runs.

Best Bowler of the Match - Canterbury Kings - Ed Nuttall

Ed Nuttall has not only been in terrific form of late, he has also been one of the most consistent exponents of pace bowling for the Kings. He was their best bowler in the last match and will be confident of delivering another good spell. Bet on Nuttall to be the best bowler of the day for Canterbury Kings.
