After a lot of uncertainties and ambiguities, we finally have the Hundred happening. First conceptualized in 208, the Hundred is finally coming to the fans after a long gap of three years. The much-anticipated hype is all set to come to life when the Oval Invincibles take on Manchester Originals in the opening match of the Hundred.
This tournament comes on the back of a successful Vitality T20 Blast and that certainly adds to the excitement. The first match of the tournament will be played on the evening of Thursday, 22nd July 2021 at the Oval Cricket Ground, London. Both the sides - Oval Invincibles and Manchester Originals have some swashbuckling players, who all will be keen to get out on the field. A cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.
Oval Invincibles have picked up some of England's best white-ball players and they will largely be unaffected by India's tour of England. It's always a luxury to have any of the likes of Jason Roy, Laurie Evans and Will Jacks as the top three of your team and the Invincibles have the services of all three of these. Apart from that, they have a dynamic middle-order that can pick up the momentum of the game right from the word go.
With the likes of Sam Curran and Sam Billings available in the middle-order, the Invincibles have a dynamic side. Apart from them, they have the services of Tom Curran and Sunil Narine, who both can be mighty effective, be it with the ball or with the bat, on their days.
All in all, the Invincibles have a batting depth that most teams will be envious of. Besides, the likes of Nathan Sowter, Tabraiz Shamsi, Reece Topley, and Saqib Mahmood ensure that their side have decent firepower in the bowling department as well. While there are some chinks in the armor and death bowling will be a concern, the Invincibles look a terrific team on paper. Beating them is going to be a challenge not only for the Originals but also for the other teams that will face Invincibles going forward in the tournament.
Jason Roy, Will Jacks, Colin Ingram, Laurie Evans, Sam Billings, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Nathan Sowter, SP Narine, Saqib Mahmood, Reece Topley.
Manchester Originals are one of the only few teams that have overhauled almost completely from the initial draft in 2019. Having said that, their squad seems to have only gained in strength. Led by Jos Buttler, the Originals have an excellent amalgamation of attack and defense.
With a batting lineup consisting of Phil Salt, Joe Clarke, Jos Buttler, and Colin Munro, the Originals have the problem of plenty at the top. Having said that, it is a good problem to have given the nature of the format. With Sam Hain, Colin Ackermann, and Carlos Brathwaite available in the middle, they have a neatly balanced side.
On the bowling front, the likes of Matt Parkinson and Lokie Ferguson will shoulder the load. However, with no other experience bowler available, the Originals certainly seem to be a bit short on strength when it comes to bowling in the middle overs. If they can take care of that phase of the innings, they will be a very difficult side to beat.
Philip Salt, Jos Buttler, Joe Clarke, Colin Munro, Tom Lammonby, Carlos Brathwaite, Tom Hartley, Fred Klaassen, ST Finn, Matt Parkinson, Calvin Harrison.

While both sides have a similarly powerful batting unit, there is a striking contrast between the bowling lineups of the two sides. Manchester Originals depend heavily on the specialists, the Invincibles are reliant more on the likes of Sam Curran and Tom Curran to captain the ship at the death. Comparing the two sides on the basis of on-paper combinations, Manchester Originals appear to be a slightly better-balanced side and are, therefore, our pick to emerge as winners in the first the Hundred match ever.
