Not often do you get to see close contests between the associate and affiliate teams but the way ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 is moving along, a couple of cracking encounters are definitely on the cards. Oman and Scotland currently occupy the two top spots on the ladder and will be looking to assert dominance over each other when they lock horns in an upcoming encounter.
Both these sides have done pretty well up until now and this match may well act as a separator between the two sides. The match is to be played on 15th April 2022 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.
Scotland may not be occupying the top spot on the points table at the moment, but they have arguably been the best side of the tournament so far. Despite a couple of their matches being abandoned, they are standing at the second spot having played half the number of games played by the team occupying the top spot.
As is currently stands, Scotland have played 15 matches and have won 10 of those. Consequently, they have 22 points to their name with a terrific net run rate of 0.616, which is the second-best amongst all sides. Another win here will bridge the gap between them and Oman and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
Scotland are coming off an imposing win over Papua New Guinea and will be brimming with confidence. Batting first on an excellent wicket, Scotland batsmen marched their way through the innings and eventually ended up with a total of 287 runs. Kyle Coetzer, Richie Berrington, George Munsey, Dylan Budge, and Michael Leask all did exceedingly well for them but the pick of their batting was undoubtedly Michael Leask, who proved to be the difference between a total of 250 and 287.
With a wicket at the expense of 30 runs in his 8 overs, Leask contributed with the ball as well. Hamza Tahir and Gavin Main picked up eight wickets between them as Scotland bundled out PNG for a total of just 164.
On paper and on the basis of recent performances, there isn't a lot that Scotland would want to change. If anything, they would be pretty content with the way their middle-order batted in the last match. Given the depth they have in their batting, we might well see them bat with more intent at the top. If they can produce a performance like they did against PNG, keeping them at bay would be very difficult, even for Oman.
Kyle Coetzer, Matthew Cross, Christopher McBride, Richie Berrington, George Munsey, Dylan Budge, Michael Leask, Mark Watt, Safyaan Sharif, Adrian Neill, Hamza Tahir.
If there's any side that as grown as quickly as Afghanistan in World Cricket, it is Oman. Despite being late to the party, they have continuously challenged the top affiliate and associate nations in the International Cricket Council and have emerged out with flying colors. In this ongoing edition of World Cup Super League 2 as well, Oman have done an excellent job, having a win percent equal to that of Scotland, who have been around for a long time.
As it currently stands on the points table, Oman are placed at the top with 18 wins from 30 matches. They have a total of 38 points to their name coupled with a very respectable net run rate of 0.107. They have a history of succumbing to pressure in crunch contest and this will be an opportunity to prove that notion wrong. The experience here can be useful going forward too with a couple of big tournaments lined up.
Oman will draw confidence from their recent win that came over Papua New Guinea. Bowling first, Oman restricted PNG to a total of just 224, which they chased down with significant ease. Jatinder Singh carried the chase for them with an unbeaten 118 and was ably assisted by the other batsmen. The match, however, was set by their bowlers who did an excellent job of keeping PNG to a modest total on a surface that had almost nothing for the bowlers.
On paper, Oman have an excellent side that has all three departments covered. If anything, they just need to be a little more consistent with the performances they put. They would want to utilze the momentum they have and if their usual suspects are able to do well, Scotland will certainly have their work cut out.
Jatinder Singh, Kashyap Kumar Prajapati, Zeeshan Maqsood, Mohammad Nadeem, Khawar Ali, Ayaan Khan, Fayyaz Butt, Kaleemullah, Naseem Khushi, Bilal Khan, Sandeep Goud.
Even though the dew will make an impact, it will be in the second half of the second innings. Apart from that, the surface is likely to get slower and lower with the passage of time. Considering that and the fact that score-board pressure can be immense in such a high-pressure game, the captain winning the toss is expected to bat first.

This is just the time of the year when it begins to get really hot in Dubai. Although this is a day-night fixture, the fitness will be tested and the fitter team will have an edge. As far as the surface conditions are concerned, it will be a batting friendly wicket with ample assistance for spinners, especially with the sun baking down. Dew will make an impact in the second-innings and defending will not be easy. Keeping that into consideration, the par score here will be about 260 and the team batting first would want to score at least 10-20 runs more than that.

Given that the two sides are placed at the top of the table, both sides will want to win here just to assert dominance. Also, the most recent encounter we saw between the two sides saw Scotland emerge on top by just four runs, speaking volumes about how closely the two sides are matches. With that recent win and a win over PNG, Scotland will be a slightly more confidence unit. Also, with a deep batting lineup and having plenty of options with the ball, Scotland have a better-balanced side as well. Considering those factors and the others stated above, a bet on Scotland win should be the way to go here.
Oman do not have too many batsmen who have performed consistently for them, but one man who has defied the odds and delivered consistently is Jatinder Singh. He is coming off a century in his last outing and will be brimming with confidence. Besides, he bats at the top of the order and will have enough time to get set before taking due risks. For that reason, a bet on him to be the best batsmen for Oman seems to be a pretty lucrative option.
This is a surface that has been excellent to bat on recently and we expect nothing different in this match as well. Both sides have superb batting lineups and will be eyeing a big score. Bet on the total runs scored in the match to exceed 489 runs.
