After so many obstacles and hurdles, we are finally into the knockouts in the Big Bash League 2021. The tournament started pretty smoothly but all changed in late December when Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat both lost most of their firepower for a few important matches. Amid all that, a few teams managed to keep their consistency going and that basically defined the playoff occupants of the competition.
Up next in the tournament, we will see Sydney Thunder take on Adelaide Strikers in the second eliminator of the tournament. Sydney Thunder had a terrific tournament, but it's been a while since they last played a match. Adelaide Strikers, on the other hand, have looked in fantastic touch in their last few matches and are coming off a big win over Hobart Hurricanes in the first eliminator.
Given the way these two sides have done recently, it is expected to be a terrific contest. This upcoming match is to be played on 23rd January 2022 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne.
Sydney Thunder were one of the best sides in the league stage and they have the credentials to show as well. Not only did they win their matches on a consistent basis right from the very beginning, they also were the only side to register two wins over Perth Scorchers, who finished at the top of the points table. They seemed to be losing a bit of impetus in the very last stages and a break here would have done them a world of good.
The last win that Sydney Thunder registered in the tournament came four days ago in a match that was their last league came as well. Sydney Thunder, however, won't be too happy with their recent performance as they have won just one of their last three games. The only win they posted in their last three matches came against Melbourne Renegades, who have been the worst performing side this season.
On paper, Sydney Thunder have a terrific side that will be boosted by the return of Usman Khawaja. He has been in terrific form of late and is also coming off a superb fifty in the last match. Apart from him as well, the Thunder have a well-packed side with match winners available right throughout. Having said that, they have been far from their best in the recent matches and would have to play their best to bounce back.
All in all, Sydney Thunder have an immculately balanced side that just seems to be losing steam. They have all the resources to emerge on top of their opponents in a knockout game and will need to execute their plans well. If they are able to play to their potential in this upcoming match, getting past them will be very difficult.
AD Hales, Usman Khawaja, M Gilkes, Jason Sangha, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Ben Cutting, Nathan McAndrew, Christopher Green, Gurinder Sandhu, Tanveer Sangha.
For the most part of the tournament, Adelaide Strikers looked a shadow of themselves and up until their last few matches, they were never even expected to make it to the playoffs. They scripted a fantastic run in their last four league matches, winning all of those, and consequently acquired one of the last playoff spots.
In the eliminator, they were pitted against Hobart Hurricanes, who too had done pretty well in the back-end of the league stage. Batting first on a good batting surface, Alex Carey and Matthew Short both produced a fantastic knock each as Strikers managed to post a tall total. However, there was little to no contribution from the rest of their batsmen and that is one thing that the Strikers would want to pan out better in this upcoming match. The bowlers did a decent job to not only pick up wickets at regular intervals but also keep things tight as Hobart Hurricanes found themselves short of the target.
The primary reason for the Strikers' underperformance in the first half of the season was their batting, but that has picked up as the tournament has progressed. Also, the addition of Travis Head and Alex Carey has proved to be a massive boost to their batting. On the bowling front, however, they no longer have the services of Rashid Khan and that could prove to be a big factor in this high-pressure contest on a ground that has big boundaries.
All in all, Adelaide Strikers not only have the momentum, but also a well-balanced side. Their batsmen have been doing pretty well of late and so are their bowlers. With a nice amalgamation of all-rounders and specialists, the Strikers have a terrific side. If they are able to play to their potential in this upcoming match, getting past them is going to be exceedingly difficult.

While there was a big gulf between the two sides in the first half of the tournament, but that seems to have completely vanished with the Strikers picking up pace. There is absolutely nothing to separate the two sides on paper. Sydney Thunder finished higher on the points table and will have the psychological advantage. Having said that, Adelaide Strikers are coming off a terrific run in their last few matches and will be brimming with confidence. Almost all of their players have looked in fantastic touch and getting past them is not going to be easy. Bet on Adelaide Strikers to emerge on top in this all-important match.
