Here we go again! It is the exciting South-Indian derby on exhibition in India's domestic competition once again. Tamil Nadu are set to take on Karnataka in the quarter-final of Vijay Hazare Trophy on 20th December 2021 at K L Saini Mansarovar Stadium , Jaipur.
As you would have guessed already, this is not the first occasion in recent times that these two sides are taking on each other. We saw them meet in the Syed Mushtaq Ali 2021 final just around a month ago when they produced a terrific contest. With a semi-final spot up for grabs, we expect nothing different this time too. A cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.
Tamil Nadu are going through a glorious phase recently and that is getting reflected in the results as well. They recently finished with the title in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 and then followed it up with a decent run in the group stage of Vijay Hazare Trophy.
With three wins from five matches, Tamil Nadu finished with 12 points in the Group B ladder. However, it wasn't the number of points that pushed them directly into the knockouts, it was their terrific net run rate of 1.052, which also shows how dominant they were in the group stage.
Tamil Nadu started off their run in a fantastic manner, winning all of their first three matches, but they stuttered towards the back-end of the group stage. They lost two matches in which they were firm favorites - one to Pondicherry and the other one to Baroda. In both those matches, their high-profile batting unit failed to deliver the goods as they could not chase down under-par totals.
Against Baroda specifically, Tamil Nadu were set to chase down a total of just 114 and they were bowled out for 73 in response. It was rather surprising to see Tamil Nadu fold like a pack of cards and that performance will likely still be fresh in the minds of players. On the bowling front, however, they were prolific as usual.
Tamil Nadu were always a strong team on paper and a number of good wins in recent times is a testament to that. They will be wary of what happened against Pondicherry and Baroda and are likely to come back stronger. If they are able to perform to their potential in this upcoming match, Karnataka will certainly have their work cut out.

Just like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka have been a powerhouse in the Indian domestic circuit in recent years. They have performed well consistently at the top level and have numbers to show that. They may not have been at their best in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, but they have done just enough to get into the top eight. They will now be looking to go all the way and if they are able to register a win in this upcoming contest, they might well be past their biggest hurdle of the competition.
In the group stage, Karnataka finished with three wins from five matches, but had to go through the preliminary quarter final to get into the top eight, largely because of their net run rate of 0.789, which was slightly inferior to that of Tamil Nadu.
Karnataka are coming off a terrific win over Rajasthan in their previous match and would be brimming with confidence. Chasing a total of 199, they were clinical with the bat as they got to the target with eight wickets in hand and 38 balls to spare. Manish Pandey and K Siddarth were the pick of their batting and they will hold the key in this upcoming contest as well.
However good their batting was, their win was actually set up by their bowlers. Prasidh Krishna, Vijaykumar Vyashak, and Praveen Dube were terrific with the ball as they picked up six wickets between them without giving much away. Returning with 4 wickets for 22 in his seven, Vyashak was the pick of the bowlers for Karnataka.
On paper, Karnataka couldn't have been a stronger unit. They ooze experience right from the top to the bottom and that is likely to be the key in this upcoming contest. It was surprising to see them being so inconsistent in the group stage and they'll need to be wary of that. If they are able to take care of execution in crunch situations, they should sail through to the next round with a win in this upcoming contest.

Being a rarely used venue, there are a lot of unknowns that the skippers will have to reckon with while at the toss. Although there will be some assistance for quick bowlers early in the day, batsmen once set can put the bowling side under tremendous amounts of pressure, especially while batting first. We expect the captain winning the toss to play it safe here and elect to bowl after winning the toss.

There will be a lot of uncertainty about the surface as not a lot of cricket gets played here at this venue in Jaipur. Going by the numbers and past results, this is expected to feature a sporting wicket with batsmen and bowlers both having some assistance. Largely due to the weather conditions, there will be some assistance for the quick bowlers early in the day and batsmen are likely to take control after the first half or so. Although the spinners will have a role to play, we do not expect this surface to slow down considerably. Short boundaries and quick outfield here mean the batsmen will get complete value for their shots. The team batting first should be looking to put a total of at least 280 runs here.

This is a knockout game and the significance of this match cannot be overstated. Not only this is a match between two biggest rivalries in India's domestic circuit, this match will eliminate the losing side from the competition. Stakes will be running high and handling pressure-cooker situations will be key here.
While there's little to choose between the sides based on their on-paper combination, Karnataka definitely seem to be a better side based on form. They are coming off a solid win over Rajasthan and are likely to be brimming with confidence. For that reason and the other factors stated above, betting on a Karnataka win should be the way to go here.
Manish Pandey may not have been at his prime in the last few editions of IPL, he has undoubtedly been brilliant across the formats while playing for Karnataka. We saw him score a terrific fifty in the last match and expect him to continue from where he left off. He is the perfect candidate to be the best batsman of the day for Karnataka.
Tamil Nadu's batting has looked a little rusty in the last couple of matches and they will be wary of that. Karnataka, on the other hand, have been brilliant with the bat, of late. Considering those two factors and the top-order of these two sides, we expect Tamil Nadu to get off to a slower start as compared to Karnataka. Bet on Karnataka to have the highest total on the board at the end of the first 15 overs.
