After a tussle that lasted for around a month, we finally have our top two teams in the Women's Super Smash. Not surprisingly, the two teams that finished at the top of the points table at the end of the league stage are the ones going to take a stab at the title finish.
Otago Sparks Women and Wellington Blaze Women are set to take on each other in the grand finale of Women's Super Smash 2021. The match between the two sides is to be played at the Seddon Park, Hamilton on 29th January 2021. Both these sides played spectacularly well in the league stage and will come out all guns blazing to get their hands on the coveted trophy. A cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.
Wellington Blaze Women had a flawless run in the league stage and with no losses, they finished at the top of the table. They registered ten out of ten wins and aggregated 40 points in total, which was eight more than the second-best side in the tournament.
The Blaze's last match was quite some time ago wherein they defeated Northern Brave Women. Batting first on a decent surface, Wellington Blaze Women totaled 154 runs at the expense of nine wickets. The total proved to be too steep to climb for Northern Braves Women as the Blaze bowlers restricted them to a total of just 100.
The Blaze Women gain strength from the likes of Sophie Devine, Amelia Kerr, Jess Kerr, and Leigh Kasperek who all did a terrific job in the group stage. Amelia Kerr, in particular, was terrific for them in both the departments and will hold the key in the grand finale of the tournament.
On paper, the Wellington Blaze Women have an immaculately balanced side. With an excellent amalgamation of specialists and all-rounders, they have a near-flawless side. If their usual suspects are able to play to their potential for them, beating Wellington Blaze Women is going to be an incredibly difficult affair.
Jessica McFadyen, Maddy Green, Thamsyn Newton, Rebecca Burns, Georgia Plimmer, Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine, Leigh Kasperek, Jess Kerr, Xara Jetly, Maneka Singh.
Otago Sparks Women were pretty good in the league stage and were second only to Wellington Blaze Women. With eight wins in ten games, Otago Sparks Women finished with 32 points to their name. Also, they are coming off a pretty recent win over Auckland Hearts Women in the preliminary final that happened just a couple of days ago.
Batting first on a reasonably good surface, Otago Sparks Women racked 143 runs in their allotted 20 overs. While the total was by no means imposing, the Sparks' bowlers did a spectacular job to keep Auckland Hearts Women from chasing it. The Hearts managed just 29 runs in total as the Sparks' bowlers made merry.
The only two losses that Otago Sparks Women faced in the group stage came at the hands of Wellington Blaze Women and the Sparks will be wary of the potency of the side they will be up against. In the tournament up until now, Suzie Bates had led the charge for them and a lot will depend on how she does in this upcoming match. The fact that she is coming off a terrific 75-run knock in the preliminary final should give her and her side a major confidence boost.
On paper, the Sparks do look a little over-dependent on the likes of Suzie Bates and Kate Ebrahim, who both did pretty well in the league stage. They would not only need to perform well themselves but also need the other players to step up their game. If that happens here in this match, Wellington Blaze Women will certainly have their work cut out.
Katey Martin, Polly Inglis, Suzie Bates, Caitlin Blakely, Bella James, Olivia Gain, Hayley Jensen, Kate Ebrahim, Eden Carson, Sophie Oldershaw, Emma Black.

The stakes involved in this match are a lot more than the title. Both these sides developed a terrific rivalry in the league stage and are expected to come out hard at each other in this match. While Otago Sparks Women have played a match recently and will be in touch, they also were defeated twice in two matches by Wellington Blaze Women. Besides, Wellington Blaze Women are a better-balanced side between the two, at least on paper. Keeping that and the other above-stated factors into consideration, betting on a Wellington Blaze win should be the way to go.
