With just one match to go in the league stage of the Super Smash 2021, the teams have already started their preparations for the knockouts. The one remaining league stage match that is to be played between Wellington Firebirds and Northern Districts is a dead-rubber, but both sides would still want to register a win here. The match between the two sides is to be played at Basin Reserve, Wellington on 24th January 2021.
Wellington Firebirds started their campaign off rather slowly and for most of the first half, they found themselves languishing in the bottom half of the points table. Just when it looked that they will not be able to even qualify for the playoffs, they picked up the pace and registered three wins on the trot. At the moment, they have already qualified for the playoffs and might want to take it easy before their knockout fixture.
Not that it matters anymore, Wellington Firebirds are placed at the third spot on the ladder with 20 points to their name, coming from five wins and four losses. Besides, they have a decent net run rate of 0.204, which just shows how dominant they have been in the wins they have posted. They are coming of a terrific win over Auckland Aces, the win that basically sealed their spot in the playoffs.
Bowling first in that match against the Aces, the Firebirds bowlers were breathing fire as they restricted the Aces to a total of just 121 runs. It wasn't any different with the bat either as Wellington Firebirds crusied to the total of 122 with eight wickets in hand and over five overs to spare. Hamish Bennett, Logan van Beek, and Ben Sears were brilliant with the ball as they not only kept picking up wickets at regular intervals, but also kept things tight for other bowlers to take advantage of the pressure. The pair of Michael Bracewell and Tom Blundell propelled them home with considerable ease after Firebirds found themselves in a spot of bother.
Wellington Firebirds are one of the most successful sides in the history of the competition and by no means can be taken lightly. They have pretty much the same side on paper that they had in the last season, in which they were title winners. All in all, Firebirds have a terrific side on paper and have the momentum to go with it as well. They would be wary of the strengths of the Northern Districts given that Northern Districts defeated Firebirds recently. With the capability that Firebirds have, beating them is going to be very difficult if they are able to play to their potential.
Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Michael Bracewell, Tom Blundell, James Neesham, Rachin Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Logan van Beek, Peter Younghusband, Ben Sears, Ollie Newton.
Northern Districts are one of the best-to-watch sides in New Zealand's domestic Cricket but more often than not they do not have their full-strength side available. They didn't have their full-strength side available in this season too, but they have just been brilliant and their position on the points table clearly reflects that.
As it currently stands, the Northern Districts are currently placed at the top spot on the ladder with just two losses in the tournament so far. They have won seven matches in total and that too with utter dominance. Their net run rate of 0.628, which is second only to that of Canterbury Kings, shows how dominant they have been.
Northern Districts are coming into this match on the back of three back to back wins and will be brimming with confidence. In their last match, they defeated Canterbury Kings by chasing a total of tall order. Tim Seifert, Katene Clark, Jeet Raval, and Colin de Grandhomme all did pretty well to nail down that target. On paper, Northern Districts have an immaculately balanced side that is loaded with talent and experience right throughout. Given the form they have been in, they will be full of confidence coming into this upcoming match. If they are able to play to their potential, beating them will once again prove to be very difficult.
Katene Clarke, Tim Seifert, Jeet Raval, Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme, Henry Cooper, Anurag Verma, TG Southee, Ish Sodhi, Joe Walker, Trent Boult.

This match may not be important from the standings point of view, but a win here could prove to be vital. This is the last match for both sides before they move to play the knockouts and no side would want to go there on a back of a loss. Comparing the two sides on the basis of form and on-paper strength, Northern Districts clearly look ahead. Bet on Northern Districts to emerge on top here in this match.
